Simple Strength Workouts for Weight-Lifting Beginners

A strong body is a healthy body.

A lot of people think of weightlifting as nothing more than a way to get incredible muscles, but it's actually a great option for improving your overall wellbeing. The more you work on improving your muscle to fat ratio within your body, the easier you'll find it to lose weight, and stay healthy thanks to a great metabolism, and a fantastic immune system.

Of course, as with many workouts, there are a number of ways to get started with strength-based fitness, and you'll need to choose the one that works best for your needs. Following, we'll give you a rundown of some of the most common strength workouts for beginners.

Bodyweight Workouts

Your first option is bodyweight training. With this choice, you don't need much more than a good set of knee compression garments, and a great attitude. Bodyweight training means using your body instead of a variety of different accessories like barbells, and dumbbells, to improve your muscle strength. The great thing about it is that you can do it from anywhere - whether you're stuck in the office, at home, or travelling across the globe.

If you do want to use a few accessories, options like pull-up bars and gymnastic rings are a good place to start, but for beginners, exercise bands seem to be the tool of choice, as they can help to assist you with movements like dips and pullups.

Dumbbell Exercises

Another fantastic strength training option for beginners is to use dumbbells. These strength workouts simply involve performing standard movements with a set of dumbbells to help put extra pressure on your growing muscles. The great thing about dumbbells is that they make it very easy for you to add and adjust small amounts of weight within each movement, and most people find them a lot less intimidating than barbells.

Remember, if you're struggling to finish a rep with a set of dumbbells - they're much easier (and safer) to drop than a huge barbell, and this can be particularly useful for unconfident newbies who are still learning the ropes.

Barbell Strength Workouts

Finally, barbell strength workouts may be the absolute favorite option for most aspiring body builders. With a set of knee compression garments to keep you support through each motion, barbells can help to build your strength very quickly and efficiently, while still allowing you to add small increments of weight to your workout each week.

Because barbells are often quite stable and easy to use - since you're using two hands instead of the one you would use with a dumbbell - it's typically much easier to push yourself a little further - particularly when you want to get involved in lower-body movements like deadlifts and squats.

Perhaps the biggest downfall of barbell training is that you can't really do it at home as well as the other options, as you'd need to invest in a squat rack, barbell set, bench, and plenty of different weights - not an easy investment when you're just starting out.
